In recent years sociologists have noticed a situation some have labeled “The Peter Pan Syndrome.” You remember Peter Pan who, along with a group of boyish pals, lived in “Never Never Land” where they roust with villainous pirates and REFUSE TO GROW UP! John Leo has written an article called, “Where Did All the Grown ups Go?” Noel Coward wrote a song entitled What’s Gonna Happen to the Children When There Aren’t Any Grown ups? Robert Bly wrote a book entitled The Sibling Society about the same issue.

They call this syndrome “Prolonged Adolescence” in which children postpone adulthood by college, then grad school, then living with their parents while they wait for the right job/spouse/opportunity to come along well into their forties. You ladies can relate. Like the woman who asked the salesman if he had anything suitable for a twelve-year-old. “It’s my husband’s birthday,” she explained. Our churches are plagued with the same problem...
